 Theo hiến pháp của Hoa Kỳ thì cứ mỗi 10 năm, chính phủ liên bang phải tổ chức một cuộc Tổng Thống kê Dân số một lần để đếm số người hiện đang sống tại Hoa Kỳ.

Mục tiêu cần đạt là sự tham gia hưởng ứng của tất cả mọi người, không phân biệt tuổi tác, chủng tộc, tôn giáo hoặc tình trạng di trú – Mọi người cần tham gia.

Mọi người cần tham gia vì dữ liệu thống kê dân số trực tiếp ảnh hưởng đến việc phân chia số ngân quỹ trợ cấp của liên bang hàng năm (hơn $400 tỷ) đến các địa phương để chu cấp cho các chương trình y tế, giáo dục và xã hội. Mỗi đầu người đếm được sẽ mang về cho cộng đồng địa phương $1,400 mỗi năm tiền trợ cấp từ liên bang.

Dữ liệu thống kê dân số là dữ liệu duy nhất dùng để quyết định số ghế trong Hạ Viện Hoa Kỳ của mỗi tiểu bang (reapportionment). Những dữ liệu này cũng ảnh hưởng rất nhiều đến việc phân định ranh giới của các vùng, khu vực hành chánh của hạ viện, tiểu bang và địa phương (redistricting)           

Tham gia thống kê dân số là việc làm rất dễ dàng, an toàn và quan trọng. Mẫu Thống kê Dân số sẽ được gửi đến tận nhà cho tất cả mọi gia đình vào tháng 3 năm 2010. Mọi người phải điền vào mẫu phiếu này và gửi lại trước ngày 1 tháng 4 năm 2010.

Tại sao quý vị nên điền vào Mẫu Thống kê Dân số 2010?

Dữ liệu thống kê dân số trực tiếp liên quan đến sức mạnh chính trị của cộng đồng của chúng ta. Ví dụ: dữ liệu thống kê dân số là thông tin duy nhất được dùng trong việc quyết định số ghế trong Hạ viện Hoa Kỳ của mỗi tiểu bang (reapportionment), và ảnh hưởng rất nhiều đến việc phân định ranh giới các vùng, khu vực hành chánh của hạ viện, tiểu bang và địa phương (redistricting).

Dữ liệu thống kê dân số cũng trực tiếp ảnh hưởng đến việc phân chia hơn $400 tỷ tiền trợ cấp hàng năm của liên bang đến các địa phương để chi cho trường học, các đề án giao thông, các chương trình y tế công cộng, và những chương trình xã hội cấp thiết khác, như là chương trình dạy tiếng Anh và dạy nghề.

Các cơ quan phục vụ cộng đồng tại địa phương dùng dữ liệu thống kê dân số trong việc viết đề án cho các nguồn tài trợ công và tư để xin ngân quỹ làm việc, ví dụ như chương trình dạy tiếng Anh và dạy nghề.

Trường học mới và các cơ sở giáo dục được xây dựng và thiết lập dựa trên số trẻ con trong vùng.

Dữ liệu thống kê dân số sẽ giúp các công ty phục vụ cộng đồng Châu Á, cộng đồng cư dân các vùng đảo Thái Bình Dương, và thổ dân Hawaii biết là nên bành trướng ở những khu vực nào.

Bệnh viện và các văn phòng bác sĩ, nha sĩ trong vùng quyết định cung cấp nhân viên nói được các ngôn ngữ Châu Á một phần cũng dựa trên kết quả của cuộc thống kê dân số.

The Chinese Christian Herald Crusades, Council of Peoples Organization, Indochina Sino-American Community Center, Japanese American Social Services, Inc., MinKwon Center for Community Action, and the NYC South Asian Task Force (Adhikaar, Chhaya CDC, SEVA Immigrant Advocacy Project, South Asian Council for Social Services, South Asian Youth Action) established local telephone hotlines in 15 languages. The Asian American Federation provided funding support for these hotlines and place transit ads (found elsewhere on fillinourfuture.org) to promote the hotlines.
