The Asian American Institute (AAI) is a pan-Asian, non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization, whose mission is to empower the Asian American (AA) community through advocacy by utilizing research, education, and coalition-building. The only multi-issue pan-Asian advocacy and policy organization in Illinois, AAI was founded in 1992 by AA community activists, academicians, and business leaders to develop consensus on a pan-Asian agenda and present a unified voice for the diverse AA community. AAI works to educate both the AA community and mainstream society about underserved AA community issues in order to engage individuals and organizations to address those issues and effect policy change. AAI’s programs are divided into four areas: Civic Participation, Community Building & Leadership Development, Promoting Equality & Inclusion and Legal and Policy Advocacy, which all help to support AAI’s mission and three pillars to: Educate, Advocate, and Empower the community. AAI is coordinating, supporting, and funding Census outreach efforts for a number of Asian American service organizations in the greater Chicago area. AAI Census outreach includes maximizing outreach within existing programs, media campaigns, outreach events, mailing campaigns, volunteer training, and planning and coordinating Census Action Week events.
