Established in 1989, the Asian American Federation is a nonprofit umbrella organization of 42 community service agencies. The Federation’s mission is to advance the civic voice and well-being of Asian Americans. Our areas of focus include health & human services, education, economic opportunity, civic participation, social justice, and strengthening community nonprofits. The Federation provides grants and capacity building assistance to member agencies, conducts research on community needs, and provides a leadership voice on behalf of the agencies and the community.
The Federation actively promotes Asian American philanthropy through donor education, issue briefings, as well as opportunities for giving and volunteering. From the funds raised annually, the Federation makes grants to its member agencies on a competitive basis.
The Federation works with member agencies to provide a unifying voice on cross-cutting issues confronting the Asian American community. It conducts research, provides briefings to government officials and philanthropic leaders, hosts forums, and organizes advocacy efforts with member agencies.
Since inception, one of the Federation’s priorities has been to help member agencies strengthen their governance, management capacity, and operational infrastructure. In addition, the Federation helps agencies access funding from government and foundations as well as facilitate collaboration among them.
For Census 2010 outreach the Federation has a four-pronged strategy. The Federation will facilitate Census Bureau activities in the Asian community, collaborate and re-grant to our partner community-based organizations (CBOs) in outreach activities, perform direct community outreach to Asian ethnicities without partner CBOs, and place paid ads in transit and ethnic media in coordination with the Census Bureau and our partners..
The NRFU phase, which stands for “Non-Response Follow-Up,” is the last in the Census process and represents the final push to collect Census information. The NRFU campaign encourages households who have not returned their Census form to welcome and cooperate with the Census taker that may knock on their door. Messaging for the NRFU campaign assures all that Census takers are sworn to secrecy and that they are there to help.
